Laboratory renovation is an important initiative for optimizing research conditions and adapting to new experimental needs. It involves a variety of aspects, including structural adjustments, equipment upgrades, pipeline modifications, and enhancements to protective systems. Given the unique nature of laboratory environments, it is essential to balance scientific research functions with environmental regulations and ecological protection requirements. Any oversight in any stage could compromise the subsequent rationality and compliance of laboratory operations. Therefore, during the renovation process, it is crucial to carefully manage key points throughout the entire workflow, thereby achieving the dual objectives of functional upgrades and robust management assurance.
Preliminary planning and compliance research are the foundation for any renovation project. First, it is essential to clearly define the renovation objectives and, based on factors such as the type of experiments, equipment specifications, and staffing requirements, develop a rational floor plan that avoids wasting space or having improperly organized functional zones. At the same time, it is necessary to coordinate with local authorities responsible for environmental protection, fire safety, and building regulations to ensure that the renovation plan complies with current standards. Special attention should be paid to verifying compliance with specific requirements related to exhaust gas treatment, wastewater discharge, fire evacuation, and explosion-proof and corrosion-resistant measures. All necessary approval procedures must be completed in advance to eliminate the risk of later rectifications.

Upgrading the security and protection system is a critical component of the renovation. Based on the types of pollutants and risk levels involved in the experiments, we will optimize facilities such as ventilation, explosion-proof measures, corrosion resistance, and emergency response systems. The ventilation system must be tailored to meet experimental needs, ensuring that fume hoods and exhaust ducts are arranged appropriately, air velocities meet standards, and there are no leaks, thereby preventing the accumulation of harmful gases. For areas handling flammable, explosive, or corrosive reagents, we will install explosion-proof electrical equipment, corrosion-resistant flooring and wall materials, and set up separate storage spaces along with emergency shower and eyewash stations. In addition, emergency evacuation routes must remain unobstructed, equipped with appropriate fire-fighting equipment and gas detection devices, and the emergency response procedures must be thoroughly refined.
Pipeline renovation and equipment adaptation must strike a balance between stability and practicality. Renovation of water and electrical pipelines must comply with laboratory management standards; the electrical system should clearly distinguish between power circuits and lighting circuits, with separate circuits and overload protection devices installed to prevent aging of wiring or overloading. Water pipelines must be properly treated for leak-proofing and corrosion resistance, and configured with dedicated pure-water and wastewater pipelines according to experimental needs, enabling differentiated water quality management and flow separation. Equipment installation requires pre-reserving adequate space and interfaces for compatibility, with particular attention paid to load-bearing capacity and ease of operation. Large-scale instruments and equipment should be allocated to specially designated areas, equipped with vibration damping and proper grounding measures to avoid interfering with the operation of other laboratory equipment.

Construction process control directly affects the quality and stability of the renovation. It is essential to select a construction team with experience in laboratory renovations, clearly define construction specifications and responsibilities, and provide specialized training for the team prior to commencement of work, emphasizing the unique requirements of laboratories. During construction, rigorous site management is required: clearly delineate between construction zones and non-construction zones, implement dust- and contamination-control measures, and take care to avoid any adverse impacts on the surrounding environment and existing equipment. At the same time, strict quality control over materials is necessary—choosing environmentally friendly and durable materials that meet laboratory standards. Critical work processes must undergo on-site acceptance inspections to ensure that construction quality meets the required standards.
Post-completion acceptance and commissioning are the final steps to ensure the effectiveness of the renovation. After the renovation is completed, a joint acceptance involving multiple parties should be organized to verify indicators such as the rationality of the layout, the integrity of stable facilities, and the sealing of pipelines. At the same time, specialized tests should be conducted to assess ventilation performance, water quality, and circuit stability. All types of experimental equipment must be commissioned to ensure their normal operation and ease of use, and the associated exhaust gas and wastewater treatment systems must meet emission standards. In addition, the renovation documentation should be perfected, recording details such as construction procedures, material specifications, and testing data, thereby providing a basis for subsequent operation and maintenance management.

Laboratory renovations must strike a balance among functional suitability, legal compliance, and long-term operational sustainability. Only by rigorously controlling key aspects throughout the entire process—from initial planning to final acceptance—can we create an experimental environment that not only meets scientific research needs but also complies with environmental protection standards, thereby providing a solid foundation for the smooth conduct of scientific research.
